The GAO has recently released a report titled "FDA Should Strengthen Its Oversight of Food Ingredients Determined to Be Generally Recognized
as Safe (GRAS)." The report is available at: http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d10246.pdf
Of particular interest is the list on the above page which clearly indicates, in the lead position, MPCs are not GRAS and should not be in food.
An interesting article about something that has proven to be UNSAFE, yet allowed as an import.
ReplyDeleteHow is it that we could be sued for not accepting their products? Makes no sense to me. And how would it be considered unfair trade if it does not meet out standards?

If my research is correct the FDA has not acted on any GRAS complaints since the 1980's.
ReplyDeleteOutrageous. Almost beyond belief isn't it? As usual even government agencies find fault with other agencies and nothing will be done. This administration treats this type of criminal behaviour the same as past administrations.We are into the second year with this pack of liars, and nothing's different.
ReplyDeleteAlmost six years since this petition was filed and not even a follow up letter has been sent out by USDA, and this product is in a multitude of our foods. Does GAO have any influence?

ReplyDeletePerhaps the most significant figure regards milk protein concentrate (MPC) and similar products, Tillison said, and he reported that imports of MPC, casein, and casinates were down significantly in 2009 from 2008 and were at their lowest levels in the last five years.
U.S. manufacturers are also producing more of the products we import. For the first time, USDA’s January report included U.S. production of MPC. Tillison said “That’s significant because it means domestic MPC production is becoming a factor and is hopefully displacing MPC imports with U.S. produced milk.”
