China

The big news today is that China has notified the U.S. that beginning China will no longer accept American dairy imports. Needless to say this presents a problem to many including those who have products in containers which will not reach port by May 1,2010.

China is citing health issues. The outcome remains to be seen.

So much for globalism.

  1. Any idea as to the value of American imports to China in dollars and lbs of milk?

  3. Hey John,
Seems to me this ought to put to bed any notion of "exports" being the solution to the U. S. farmer's problems. China cites "health issues"? What a crock!
Hell of it is, the Obama Adm. will kiss their asses and jump through any hoops the Chinese care to devise...
And American farm leaders still promote the damnable bull-shit that U.S. farmers have a responsibility to "feed the world!" Bull-shit! U.S. farmers better get their heads out here in the fresh air and sunshine with the rest of us and start feeding their families!
Canadian dairymen feed nobody but Canadians and they're paid fair prices to do so. Canadian consumers pay less for dairy products than U.S. consumers and yet the farmers get over twice as much for their milk... now what to hell is wrong with that picture??
U.S. dairymen have got to get over wanting to be "liked" and start demanding some respect! This nonsense is not going to end until U.S. dairy farmers grow a set of balls and dump the damn milk until somebody in Washington blinks! That's the way it looks from here... Nate Wilson

  7. So if they want to send us Yak milk products laced with malamine it's OK, but our INSPECTED and REGULATED milk isn't good enough for them? I for one will not buy anything made in China, and Nate is right, and if Obama takes this on his knees and bows to the Chinese like he usually does the USA takes it on the chin again.

  8. It seems to me, China is using the old tactic of accusing some one else of doing just what they are inorder to divert public attention

PS I TOO AGREE WITH NATE!

  9. I have an item unrelated to China....on my way to digging for something else, I was linked to a website called WiDBA, Inc. Wisconsin Dairy Business Association. Being from WI, I poked around a little and found that one of their menu items was called "immigration". I thought, how interesting. It consisted of basically tips and helpful hints on what do to in case of an ICE raid. So I poked around a little more. Found that they had many, many sponsors, a lot of them were people I pay money to on a monthly basis (my feed supplier, my dairy supply vendor, my mortgage holder, my local repair shop, my semem supplier, basically all the people I paid last year when my own family went without. I wondered if any of my milk check deductions went to support this Association. So I emailed the contact person. I also asked why the dairy industry is so hell-bent on hiring illegals. The Executive Director emailed me back and said no, nothing out of my milk check funds this place. (I would say INDIRECTLY absolutely!) Also, that we need "the cows in Wis to get milked" and we need to keep the Wis cheese plants full" so I can get my volume premium. She also said WI is 13% short on milk according to the Wis Cheese Makers Assoc.!! WHAT!!! Here we are, thinking the country has too much milk, and here in good ol' WIS we are hurting for milk??? Here I was, culling because I thought it was the RIGHT thing to do, given the SURPLUS, and I should have been BUYING COWS and HIRING ILLEGALS! Thoughts??

  10. Nate- not true about Canada. The canadains come down to US and buy a lot of milk, eggs and gas. Milk is about six dollars a gallon in Canada. We have very cheap milk products and they are reflected in our milk checks! Eric

  11. Do you have a link to a news story that reports this item? I have not been able to find anything online about it.

  13. Hey Eric Nate is right, it is true that Canadian consumers pay less for a grocery basket of dairy products as compared to the U.S.. I have a report out of Canada that shows this. Retail Price index data since 1997 shows that the Canadians have paid less every single year except for 2006 when processors and retailers didn't raise there prices aggressively in light of low milk price that year. In 2007 the price was raised and the Canadian market is less once again. Who would of thought that stable raw milk prices on the consumer actually saves money in the long run. Asymmetric pricing of dairy products creates chaos and dysfunction in the supply and demand system brought on by greed. I will kindly share the data with you if you email me blcgotham@yahoo.com.
